What They Died For

Memorial Day honors our fallen soldiers. Those who gave their lives in defense of this country. What possesses someone to lay down their life for someone else? To go out and die for total strangers? To give up a chance at happiness, a career, growing old, seeing their grandchildren?

I don’t honor our veterans for dying in glorious battle. War isn’t glorious at all. I honor them for doing what others can’t or won’t. For giving the next generation a chance to grow up and experience the things they wouldn’t get the chance to otherwise. For ensuring this country, one of the greatest and most free places on earth, continues to exist.

This Memorial Day give thanks for those men and women who gave their lives so that yours can continue. And maybe take a minute to appreciate the things and people you have, and to realize the real cost of them.
